It was a November to Remember! After putting in 6 all day hunts over the course of the rut, the biggest deer I had yet seen while hunting walked in. The story of this hunt isn’t nearly complete without the strategy that went into it. The big woods terrain we had been hunting contains gently rolling hills with poplar, spruce, and maple scattered throughout. Lowlands were filled with cedar or spruce swamps. Early in the rut, high winds had the deer moving closer to the swamps. I had a few chances at smaller 8 pointers but never punched the release. The following weekend had bluebird skies and calm winds. After about an hour on stand, it just didn’t feel right. So I took down my stand and moved to a more open area in higher elevation. Another eight pointer moved through the timber about 200 yards further up. Once again, I took down the stand and moved to that area. The following morning, returning to the same spot, it all came together!
